Stila's principle investor (equity firm) bought Newport News and Spiegel last year sometime. They have been working on cross branding their companies for awhile now...
@Bianca: Thanks for the info. Still to me, it doesn't seem that the two companies have much in common. I see the Stila consumer as someone a bit younger than the Spiegel/Newport News one. Could just be me though. =)
For a moment, I felt like asking what is Newport News as I have never heard of it in my life (I don't deny that I am rather ignorant though) but now I know...
I personally find the cross braching thing more acceptable than the tassel belt thing on Stila's website. Although I think it's kind of funny that while in one hand they are making Stila sound so precious "Buy $75 get a lip glaze, only good for the first 1000 buyers!" in another hand they are making Stila sound like a as-seen-on-tv brand on their current advertising approach in the offcial Stila website.
OK whippersnappers, I own items from both Stila and Speigal LOL!!
I am guessing that they are trying to get those Speigal / NNews shoppers into some nice reoccurring purchases from Stila on their credit cards. Just a guess....
@lexi920: Glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's a little strange!
@Heather / Eyeconic: Well I hope you luck out with more Stila in your life. =)
@Citrine: I think you nailed it. The whole brand is getting a little "as seen on tv" for me. First the beauty player which you can get on auto-delivery (a la qvc) and now cross branding with a catalogue brand. Before it was more of a niche mid-high end brand carried in boutiques and department stores and they seem to be getting more accessible, which is nice but I think it could go too far. As long as they don't start advertising on late-night tv... Maybe I shouldn't have said that...
@Bianca: I own a few things from Newport News myself! I definitely think that Stila on the Newport News site fits in better than the (no offense if you like them) hideous tassle me belts on the Stila site!

ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%!! It just doesn't seem right to me at all...
ReplyDeleteThis is good news for me, as my mom frequently orders from Newport News... maybe I can convince her to get me a few things when she orders next ;]
